Modern Foreign Languages

Intent

At St Mawes Primary we have chosen to study Spanish.

We aim to foster our children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our children are taught to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.  The learning of a language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils, helping them to develop communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an aim of making substantial progress in one language.  The  children’s knowledge of how language works will be developed to lay the foundations for further language learning in future.

Our Spanish curriculum aims to instil a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures. We want pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in Spanish for practical purposes, using both written and spoken Spanish. Through our scheme of work, we aim to give pupils the foundations for language learning that they can take on to their next phase of education.

Implementation

At St Mawes we deliver our Spanish curriculum through a scheme of work which covers:

  • Speaking and pronunciation
  • Listening
  • Reading and Writing
  • Grammar
  • Intercultural understanding
  • Language detective skills

The scheme is a spiral curriculum model with key skills and vocabulary revisited repeatedly with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revise and build upon their previous learning.

Impact

Pupils will:

  • Engage in purposeful dialogue and express an opinion
  • Make attempts to read unfamiliar words, phrases and short texts
  • Speak and read aloud with confidence and accuracy in pronunciation
  • Demonstrate understanding of spoken language by listening and responding appropriately
  • Use a bilingual dictionary to support their language learning
  • To be able to construct short texts on familiar topics
  • Have developed an awareness of cognates and near-cognates and be able to use them to tackle unfamiliar words in Spanish,
  • Meet the end of Key Stage 2 stage expectations outlined in the national curriculum for Languages
