Intent
Technology is changing the lives of everyone. Through teaching Computing, we equip children to participate in a rapidly changing world where work and leisure activities are increasingly transformed by technology.
It is our intention to enable children to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information. We also focus on developing the skills necessary for children to use algorithms and develop their understanding of coding. We want children to be able to safeguard themselves online and demonstrate the importance of using technology safely. Our intent is for children to know more, remember more and understand more in computing so that they leave primary school computer literate.
Implementation
The National Curriculum's Computing content is used as a starting point for devising our curriculum with the objectives broken down into manageable, sequenced chunks for children over both Keystages, with further objectives added that widen the scope and reach of the subject to reflect its ever-growing breadth and importance.
Progression through the framework is based on key items of knowledge and skill being re-visited and expanded upon, allowing children to build solid foundations in their long-term understanding of Computing. Our bespoke framework provides children with a broad, balanced set of learning experiences. With strategic hardware and software choices made by schools, a multitude of high-quality, yet easy-to-access, learning experiences are made available for staff and students.
E Safety
E-safety is an integral part of children’s education in today’s digital world and is embedded in their learning at St Mawes Primary. We also want to help our parents and children improve their own understanding of e-safety issues so they can learn to use the internet and all digital media in a safe and secure way.
As part of your child’s curriculum and the development of computer skills, we provide access to the internet only in teacher supervised lessons. We strongly believe that the use of the web and email is hugely worthwhile and an essential tool for children as they grow up in the modern world. But because there are always concerns about children having access to undesirable materials, we have taken positive steps to deal with this risk in school. Our school internet access provider operates a filtering system that restricts access to inappropriate materials.
To try and help parents with the fast moving and changing world of internet and social media we've suggested a few internet sites which are fantastic resources. These are sent out regularly via email but can also be found on our social media pages.
Impact
Children will:

- Be aware of technological uses and developments in the wider world.

- Be able to apply the British values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty when using digital systems, understanding at all times the etiquette required as an online user.
- Be creative and imaginative when using technology to present, record and share their work.
- Be responsible, respectful and safe users of data, information and communication technology.
- Be digitally literate and develop the ability to think critically and analytically.
- Develop and widen their computer-related vocabulary.
- Be able to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content effectively and safely.
